Cinthia, I’m so happy that it resonates with you! We always have interesting conversations about sexism and culture and I’m grateful to get your feedback on this topic.

I honestly don’t even know what their music sounds like, and in this case I suppose I’m glad, since I’d be pretty disappointed (and disgusted and appalled) too if I was into it.

The arguments you mention do blur the larger impact this has on women, like you say, but they also distort it and function just like with rape scenarios: the blame is shifted onto the victim! Outrageous!

I think they’re both really young and apparently troubled people who, as you say, haven’t dealt with the situation properly. Hopefully, though, they eventually will. It would do their fans (and our victim-blaming culture) a lot of good!

Thanks for this post! I’m really dissapointed at Rihanna and Chris Brown since I respected them as artists who did awesome things in the Hip Hop Music industry. Also, the argument of ‘Rihanna asked for this’ or ‘There are women who enjoy abuse as a sexual turn on’ really blurs the larger impact this has on women. Whether the whole affair was set up or not to draw in media attention, I think both of them haven’t dealt with properly with the situation. And if they did do it on purpose to bring media attention, I think that’s really cheap and sad.

Interesting, Sophie. I’d never read Cosmo before, I don’t think, just YM and Seventeen, mainly, when I was in middle school, which didn’t talk about sex that much — or maybe I didn’t notice because I wasn’t interested yet. But from the little I have read and from what I know about “women’s magazines” in general, what you say makes all the sense in the world.

If only more women would stop reading that brainwashing, self-esteem-warping garbage! There are much better magazines out there: Bitch, Ms, Mother Jones, Bust, Utne, … Of course, they’re only engaging for readers who enjoy thinking. Then again, while Cosmo encourages not-thinking, that doesn’t mean its readers don’t like to think, just that they have a side to them that indulges in crap literature and being told what to do/wear/buy/and so on. Oh wait.

Since its launch (late ’50s?)Cosmo has been unable to differentiate between strong, independent woman and victim. I haven’t looked at it for years, but as I recall its advice usually was along the lines of grovel if you want to be sucessful in your career and with men.

How many times did we hear this story back in college? And no one EVER said it was gray rape, or any other color. It was always clear that no was no, and if the guy insisted, it was rape. How could a woman have written that crappy article?
